When I first transitioned to a plant based lifestyle, I was totally evangelical about it. I may even go as far as saying that I was totally critical and harshly judgmental towards those who did not share my beliefs around food. I tried to pretend that I was just standing up for a cause, but in actuality, all I was doing was isolating myself.
I would often resent the fact that my dietary choices were always a topic for discussion, either while eating with friends and family or while just hanging out. I often just wanted everyone to ignore the fact that I was eating differently, because I constantly felt attacked by their questioning. I generally ended up feeling like I was some sort of victim, being criticized for my new, what I thought to be virtuous way of eating.
What I have come to realize over time, was that my criticism of others diets, opened the door for people to criticize me. I learned that as started to be less vocal, and less judgmental, just leading by example, the conversations I had with people became ones that were centered around genuine openness and curiosity, rather than defense.
I now feel that the more comfortable I am with my choices, the less I feel I need to defend them. I feel that people are far more open to learning when I am simply just living my life, rather than trying to get them to see my point of view.
